How to Put on a Lace Front Wig

How to Put on a Lace Front Wig

Whether you are suffering from alopecia, hair thinning, or just want to try a different look, lace front wigs are the ideal choice. They provide a convenient and undetectable option for those who want the most natural look. The primary reason why lace front wigs are lauded by many in the fashion and film industry is due to their discreet hairline. Unless you tell them, most people will not be able to tell that you are wearing one.

However, you don't have to be a celebrity to try one out. Although they are slightly expensive, high-quality lace front wigs are easy to wear and last a good while. They come in a variety of different colors to suit your needs, and they can be styled whichever way you want.

Putting on a lace front wig isn't that complicated once you understand how it all works. It may take you a couple of times until you can put them on easily. To help you get started, follow the guide below step by step to learn how to wear one.

Required Items

Lace front wig

Wig cap/stocking cap

Wig glue

Hair clips

Ethyl alcohol

Cotton swab

Wash your Hair

Before you can put on your wig, it's important to wash your hair like you usually would to avoid any scalp irritation later on. Once your hair and scalp are dry, take a cotton swab and dip it in alcohol. Now use the cotton swab to wipe the skin all the way around your hairline.

Flatten your Hair

To make the wig look as natural as possible, you need to flatten your natural hair first. This is best done by braiding your hair into cornrows if you have short hair. However, if your natural hair is long, you will need to tie it in a low ponytail and then wrap it into a flat bun. Make sure to secure the wrapped bun with bobby pins.

Put on a Stocking Cap

Stocking caps are round, tight caps that help your natural hair stay flat. Moreover, your lace front wig goes over the stocking cap and is held in place by applying glue to the cap.

However, if you are bald, you can put the wig directly on your scalp without the need for a stocking cap. This is mostly a preference as some people wear the stocking cap even if they are bald.

To wear the stocking cap, simply pull it down on your head until it's a snug fit. Then, check yourself in the mirror and adjust the cap until its front edge meets your natural hairline.

Make sure that all of your hair is tucked under the cap, even the hair on the nape of your neck.

Putting on the Wig

Check the Fit of the Wig

Before you apply any adhesive, you should first put on the wig on the stocking cap and check the tightness. If the wig doesn't fit snugly over the cap, then that's no good. Sit in front of a mirror and see how the wig fits when you first put it on.

If it is loose and easily moves around, find the strap on the inside of the wig and tighten it. Do this until the wig sits snugly over your head.

If your head hurts when wearing the wig, it's too tight. However, if it moves around when you move your head, then it's too loose. Play around with the strap until you find a comfortable fit.

Trim the Excessive Lace

Now that you have found the perfect fit, you need to trim some of the lace on the front of the wig. It is normal for your wig to have extra lace on the front. This is so that it can be tailored to individual needs.

While you have the wig on, check yourself in the mirror and cut the lace around your natural hairline. To keep the hair from coming in the way, use a few clips. Just be wary of accidentally cutting any hair. Normally, it is advised that you leave about 3mm of lace on the front.

Apply Glue

It is generally a good idea to take a little glue and put it on your skin anywhere you want on the body. This is done to check if your skin is allergic to the glue you are using. For example, if your skin turns red and develops a rash after a few mins of application, your skin is allergic.

However, there is no need to worry because wig glue comes in many different types. You just need to get one that is specifically made for people with skin allergies.

To apply the glue, use a clean makeup brush to gently apply the glue in a thin line along your hairline. You may need to wait a few minutes for the adhesive to become "tacky". Different adhesives have different instructions, so read the instructions on the bottle.

Once enough time has passed, pull the wig over your head and adjust it so that the hairline is where you want it to be. Now apply slight pressure to the lace of the wig so that it sticks to the glue.

Style Your Hair

Now all that's left is to style your new hair the way you want. However, you might need to wait a little while before styling your hair as not to disturb the bond. Make sure the glue has dried before combing.

Now you know exactly how to put on a lace front wig in just a few easy steps. Now you can have fun trying out different styles and colors of wigs.
